The study will focus on the effect of the techniques on plant survival and fitness, soil variables related with water availability and fertility, biochemical features of soil organic matter and release of specific compounds, as well as on techniques durability and degradability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tasks (<a title=\"Centre Tecnol\u00f2gic Forestal de Catalunya\" href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/?page_id=118\">CTFC<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#\"><br \/>\n[&#8220;3.1: Selection of areas for field trials establishment&#8221;, &#8220;3.1: Selection of areas for field trials establishment&#8221;]<br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"31\">\n<p>The 8 field trials are deployed across a range of 4 strongly contrasted climatic areas in NE Spain, representative of the main climates of the European and Mediterranean context. The treatments are combinations of soil conditioners and weeding techniques, indicated with an &#8220;X&#8221; at the following table:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Treatments_Sustaffor1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Treatments_Sustaffor\" src=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Treatments_Sustaffor1-1024x363.png\" width=\"550\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Techniques marked in green are novel techniques while those in yellow are reference techniques\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * Only in Subalpine conditions<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the black truffle field trial (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Sustaffor_Field-trial_4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Field trial 4<\/a>), the design and the treatments were modified because of the particularities of this production and the need for utilizing different reference techniques: in this case, there are 13 treatments, with 12 trees per treatment organized in a split-plot design, with 12 blocks of 1 tree each. The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/?page_id=436\">Photo Gallery <\/a>includes pictures of the installation process of the different field trials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#\">[&#8220;3.4. Mulch degradation trial &#8220;]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"34\">Parallel to the field trials, a network of 3 mulch degradation trials has been established at Semiarid, Mediterranean humid and Subalpine conditions. Experience under semi-controlled conditions&#8221;,&#8221;3.5. Experience under semi-controlled conditions&#8221;]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"35\">\n<p>The experience under semi-controlled conditions (pot experiment) was implemented in November 2014 within a shading structure in the Experimental Fields of University of Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment is composed of 144 pots (2.5 l) with a loamy soil low in carbonates (&lt;\u00a010 %), subjected to an irrigation program designed to reflect a typical Mediterranean climate. Irrigation is performed individually for each pot, at 15-days intervals.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment follows a full factorial design:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1079\" alt=\"Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions\" src=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions.jpg\" width=\"672\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions.jpg 1343w, https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions-300x70.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Treatments_semi-controlled_conditions-1024x240.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Tree monitoring will be done similarly to the corresponding of field experiences (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustaffor.eu\/?page_id=249\">Field trials monitoring<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Soil monitoring will be performed 6 (April 2015) and 12 (September 2015) months after the trial installing, each affecting to 48 pots.
